THE Chimp Paradox - book review
The mind management programme for confidence, success and happiness.
Summary
The chimp paradox is a powerful mind management model that can help you understand your psychological inner mind and how it works in every life aspect. This model will let you comprehend controlling your emotions and thinking logically rather than emotionally in different sensitive times.
Throughout the journey of this book, you will explore the seven major areas of your psyche which are: (Your inner mind, Others, Communication, the world in which you live, maintaining your health, success and happiness) understanding each one of them separately.
In the first place, the psychological mind is divided into three main parts (chimp, human, the computer).
When you were in the worm, two different brains developed independently (the chimp and the human) and introduced themselves to each other by making connections. Unfortunately, each one of those two brains were thinking differently, and they were not in agreement for most of the things. From there a problem arises, either one of these two brains could run your life while each one of them battling to the other on your control. They try to work together and therein is the problem since they are completely varied. The human and chimp have diverse personalities, agendas, way of thinking and modes of operating.
The chimp is your emotional thinking machine working with feelings and impressions. On the other hand, the human is the logical thinking part of your brain working with facts and truth. As we go in our day-to-day activities, we continually receive information. Both the chimp and human interpret this information in different ways. The chimp uses emotional thinking to put things together and forms a plan of action. Alternatively, the human interprets the information by searching for the facts and establishing the truth and then puts things together in a logical manner and forms a plan of action.
Sometimes we become irrational in our thinking, this is because our chimp takes over our control and thinks for us. You could identify whether you are thinking (the human) or your chimp is hijacking you by observing the traits and steps of your thinking. The chimp is fast to reach a conclusion and does not wait all the information to come out and then looks for emotive judgement that supports its conclusion. While the human works with evidence and search for proof, then it reaches a conclusion in an open-minded way.
In terms of agendas, the chimp's purpose and agenda is survival and to warn you any danger that may arise. The agenda of human part of your brain is to achieve self-fulfillment. To achieve self-fulfillment, you can take many different ways, and it is up to you to work out what is it that you want to do with your life.
Our emotional chimp is five times stronger than our human (you). So, we cannot control our chimps and arm-wrestle it, but we can manage it, and we need a management plan. In this case. willpower is not a good way to try to manage your chimp.
The third part of our psychological mind is the computer. It has two main functions which are thinking and acting automatically by using programmed thoughts and behaviors and to act as a reference source for information, beliefs and values. The computer is more powerful than the chimp and the human, since both of them use the computer as a reference source to look when help and guidance is needed.
From chapter 7-9 the author explains importance of effective communication to others and to do that he suggests understanding the mind and personality of others. When we meet other people there are three steps that can help us deal with them and understand them better and they are:
- Do not make any assumptions about them

Cons
- The book is primarily based on Western psychological concepts and may not fully address cultural nuances specific to our country.
- Certain psychological strategies or terminology in the book may not align with Islamic teachings or practices. For instance, the concept of the "chimp" might not directly correlate with Islamic views on self-management and emotional control.
- The book emphasizes individual personal responsibility and self-management, which might contrast with more community-oriented or collectivist approaches prevalent in some cultures like ours. This focus on individualism might not resonate with those who value communal support and collective well-being.
